Laser‑induced fluorescence sensors that read chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter, hydrocarbons and plastics in the upper water layer, from a vessel underway, a fixed coastal station, or a small aircraft
From 16 to 19 June the LIFL-11 mapped chlorophyll-a and CDOM across the whole Goczałkowice reservoir with the University of Warsaw and the University of Silesia, then moved to a still lake nearby to look for golden algae

First marine field tests of the full instrument suite, 7–9 October 2025, in the ESA PHY2FLEX campaign. LIFL-11, mFL-12, and mHR-2 ran three days in real sea conditions and returned clean data, with example Rrs spectra captured on 8 October. Vessel support provided by CNR (Italy).

Up to 1,000 micro-observatories on French lakes, rivers, and coastal lagoons, reading chlorophyll-a, suspended sediment, and dissolved organic matter at high frequency and calibrating the satellite products above them
The two lidars differ in how much spectrum they read and how long they stay on the water, while the mHR-2 carries no laser and reads the sunlight the water reflects

View detailsThe record runs from the Black Sea and the Caspian to the Arctic Kara Sea, and from Patos Lagoon in Brazil to Issyk-Kul, the Volga, Lake Balaton, and the lagoon at Venice. Venice is where all three instruments ran together in October 2025, under ESA's PHY2FLEX campaign.
