mHR-2 radiometer pole-mounted against clear sky during a vessel deployment

mHR-2

Measures the above-water Rrs a satellite estimates, from the surface and free of the atmosphere

The only instrument in the lineup that carries no laser. A motorised head cycles through downwelling irradiance, sky radiance, sea-surface radiance, and a dark reading, returning Rrs across 320–880 nm. Reading from the surface leaves the atmosphere out of the retrieval, which is what makes the number usable as a satellite match-up. Developed in the OQOMETHI project and field-tested with ESA at Venice in 2025.

Measures

What it measures

Each parameter is resolved through its own optical process

Above-water Rrs

Interleaves downwelling irradiance, sky radiance, and sea-surface radiance with dark-current auto-calibration

Process
Passive radiometry
Range
320–880 nm

Satellite match-up

Derives the same Rrs a satellite estimates, for cal/val pairing alongside the active LIF measurement

Process
Passive radiometry

Sun-glint rejection

The 40° sky and 140° sea-surface geometry, both from zenith, minimises surface glint

Process
AWR viewing geometry

Autonomous operation

Runs unattended with automatic upload to cloud storage

Process
Unattended, with cloud upload
