The structure of thermohaline and bio-optical fields in the surface layer of the Kara Sea in September 2011

Measurements of thermohaline and bio-optical fields in the surface layer of the Kara Sea were carried out in September 2011 during the 59th cruise of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. Data were collected underway using a pump-through CTD system (temperature and salinity) and a UV fluorescent lidar (chlorophyll, total suspended matter and dissolved organic matter) at high spatial resolution, about 10–100 m. Sea-area distribution maps are presented, frontal zones detected, T–S diagrams constructed and the basic water types identified; Ob–Yenisei freshwater runoff is shown to be the main factor shaping the surface layer. A numerical model of continental-runoff dynamics is then run under the real wind conditions of August–September 2011 and validated against the in-situ data.
