Spatial variability of concentrations of chlorophyll a, dissolved organic matter and suspended particles in the surface layer of the Kara Sea in September 2011 from lidar data

Results of underway laser remote sensing of the Kara Sea surface layer, in continuous automatic mode, are presented from the UFL-9 fluorescent lidar operated aboard the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh during cruise 59 in 2011. The lidar, the approach to interpreting seawater fluorescence, and aspects of calibration and measurement are described; calibration rests on laboratory analysis of surface water samples collected during the cruise. Spatial distributions of chlorophyll a, total organic carbon and suspended-matter concentration in the upper quasi-homogeneous layer are mapped and the characteristic scales of their variability estimated. Relationships between the patchiness of the upper layer and atmospheric forcing and freshwater runoff are shown.
