Ground truth data on chlorophyll-a, chromophoric dissolved organic matter and suspended sediment concentrations in the upper water layer as obtained by LIF lidar at high spatial resolution

This study reports field measurements on Lake Balaton, Hungary, over three days, 10, 11 and 12 September 2008, made to test the newly developed ultraviolet (UV) fluorescent portable lidar UFL-8 in natural lake waters and to validate it against conventional contact measurements. The results were compared with MODIS/Terra imagery received at the satellite monitoring station of Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest) in an attempt to calibrate medium-resolution satellite bands against the lidar. Water-quality parameters were surveyed by the UFL lidar within a window close to the satellite overpass, and high-resolution maps of chlorophyll a, chromophoric dissolved organic matter and total suspended sediment distributions were obtained.
