Volga 2024, Saratov reach

A late-May 2024 LIF LiDAR run on the lower Volga near Saratov, 24,779 returns mapping chlorophyll a and suspended matter along a regulated river reach. With the 2018 Volga–Don survey, part of an ongoing record of one of Europe's most heavily impounded river systems.

The lower Volga is a chain of large impoundments rather than a free-flowing river, and its water quality varies sharply between reaches and with the season. In late May 2024 a LIF LiDAR ran a 24,779-point survey of the Saratov reach, mapping chlorophyll a and suspended matter along the channel as the spring growth season got under way, with median chlorophyll near 4 µg/L.

The campaign extends a Volga-basin record that also includes a 2018 survey at the Volga–Don confluence to the south, where suspended matter dominated the signal. Running the same fast sensor along successive reaches and years is how the method builds the regional, transferable retrieval models that monitoring a system of this scale would otherwise demand station by station.
