Laser remote sensing of an algal bloom on the Volga River in central Russia was carried out. A compact Raman lidar was installed on a small ship to probe the surface water layer across different typical regions of the Gorky Reservoir. Elastic and Raman scattering, together with chlorophyll fluorescence, were quantified, mapped and compared with data from a commercial salinity, temperature and depth (STD) probe equipped with a blue-green-algae sensor. Good correlation between the lidar and the contact measurements was established.
