Estimating the deposition of river-borne suspended matter from the joint analysis of suspension concentration and salinity

A simple method is proposed for estimating the deposition and mixing rates of river-borne suspended matter and for mapping deposition intensity in near-estuary sea areas from the joint analysis of total suspended solids (TSS) and salinity. The relative share of river runoff in seawater is read from salinity; for matter subject to deposition, the expected TSS follows from linear river–sea mixing, and the deposited amount is the difference between that expectation and the measured TSS. The scheme was implemented with high-resolution field data near the Mzymta River mouth in the Black Sea, where TSS was obtained by ultraviolet fluorescence lidar and salinity by a pump-through CTD system.
