Underwater laser-induced fluorescence lidar

Real-time detection of hydrocarbon leaks, wastewater, and oil-in-water emulsions while they are still in the water column, from a compact autonomous lidar built to mount on underwater drones and surface vessels

Problem

Every existing method detects oil once it has surfaced. Europe has 3,500 industrial sea outflow pipes, 9,000 wastewater discharge points, 1,200 marine and river ports, and more than 10,000 km of offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and none of it has a remote technique that reads a contaminant flow while the flow is still submerged, at the sensitivity the job needs and independently of the weather.

Approach

SubseaLIF productises ssLIF, an underwater laser-induced fluorescence lidar that works inside the water column and alongside infrastructure rather than reading the surface from above. It is compact and autonomous, unaffected by sunlight, waves, or weather, and integrates with underwater drones, surface vessels, and autonomous platforms. The design is modular, from shallow and coastal work toward deep-sea configurations at 6000 m.

Outcome

ssLIF is in development. The target is real-time detection of hydrocarbon leaks, sewage, organic pollutants, and oil emulsions below the surface, at a range and selectivity beyond what is on the market, and compact enough to deploy at the scale the infrastructure implies.

Our contribution

LIFeLiDAR leads the optical-engineering work and supplies the LIF instrument platform. Adequate Tools brings the compact underwater systems, the autonomous sensing, and the mechatronics, and the two run joint validation.
