Problem

Every existing method detects oil only after it surfaces. There is no remote technique for finding hydrocarbon leaks, sewage, or oil emulsions while they are still in the water column — leaving subsea pipelines, outfalls, and offshore infrastructure without an early-warning measurement at the source.

02

Approach

The programme productises ssLIF, an underwater laser-induced fluorescence LiDAR built on the proven LIFL-11 platform rather than a compact-sensor variant. It operates in the water column and near pipelines, mounts on ROVs and surface drones, and is designed to scale toward scanning and deep-sea configurations (to 6000 m).

03

Outcome

ssLIF is in development. The target is real-time detection of hydrocarbon leaks, sewage, organic pollutants, and oil emulsions below the surface — a capability with no existing remote alternative.

04

Our contribution

LIFeLiDAR leads the optical-engineering work, supplies the instrument platform, and runs joint validation alongside the consortium partners.
